‘Italy’s Solar Renaissance: the Challenges, the Opportunities and the Grid’, stemming from insights provided by Managing Director Cristiano Spillati during a chat with PV Tech at Large Scale Solar Europe 2024 in Lisbon. Italy experienced a significant resurgence in solar PV installation in 2023, with over 5GW of new capacity, mainly from large-scale projects. However, challenges persist, including grid congestion, permitting issues, and a shortage of bankable EPC contractors. Despite obstacles, there's optimism for increased utility-scale solar development, driven by the end of rooftop PV subsidies and the expectation of larger project sizes in the future.
